Growth in fraudulent university test centres spreads north
Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised an alarm over the influx of fraudulent computer-based test (CBT) centres in some parts of the North. JAMB Registrar Professor Ishaq Oloyede said the increase of rogue CBT centres in the North marks a departure from what has been mostly a problem from the South, writes Seun Opejobi for the
Daily Post.
Oloyede raised the alarm at a press conference in Abuja, disclosing that over 400 candidates currently seeking admission into higher education institutions across the country were involved in admission fraud. The JAMB registrar also alleged that some tertiary institutions were accomplices in the widespread irregularities. According to him, the first 64 cases of CBT infractions currently treated by the board were from the North, with some having multiple cases of up to 96 irregularities. ....

International student strategies must change, says ACE
A new report from the American Council on Education (ACE) calls on United States college and university leaders to fundamentally rethink their approach to international students, arguing that “a gap between rhetoric and reality” not only raises concern about the quality of the international student experience but also misses an opportunity to nurture more meaningful global engagement on campus.
Drawing on a wide swathe of research, the report notes numerous shortcomings associated with the education of international students and lays out an ambitious framework for change that centres on building “lifelong relationships between students and institutions from the first point of contact to their postgraduate careers”. ....

Government unveils post-pandemic IHE recovery strategy
In attempting to recover international higher education (IHE) exports post-pandemic and post-Brexit, the United Kingdom will prioritise opportunities in India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Nigeria, according to its revised International Education Strategy.
The International Education Champion, Sir Steve Smith, will focus on these countries as an immediate priority, but he will also focus on Brazil, Europe, China and Hong Kong.
Another of his priorities will be to work with the British Council to identify and resolve barriers to recognition of online and blended learning internationally.
Meanwhile the new Turing study abroad scheme will open up opportunities for UK students to study in other countries, with a particular emphasis on broadening participation by students from disadvantaged backgrounds. ....
