Pandemic is ideal time to launch Thetford church
The young couple behind a new church in Thetford say a pandemic is the ideal time to plant a new congregation as this should be the time that churches are actually made for. Keith Morris reports.
Microbiologist Matt (aged 35) and primary school teacher Tor Bush (36) launched Thetford Vineyard Church in the middle of the pandemic last July. They have lived in Thetford since 2007 and the new church was planted from West Suffolk Vineyard Church in Bury St Edmunds.

Monthly community meals began back in 2018, but it was over the summer that the couple were formally commissioned into their new role as church leaders. ....

Andy Bryant is looking forward to an easing of Covid restrictions, but believes that the Church will face many more challenges in the coming months and years.
When the first lockdown began there was much talk about how this could be an important moment of change. Many talked about a determination that when lockdown was lifted, we should not go back to our old ways. We could seize this moment and build back different and build back better.

Twelve months later as we are still enduring our third lockdown and wondering when, and how, it will end, we just want our old lives back. We want to be able to do all the things we used to do. We fear too much has changed and not for the better. Businesses, shops, cafés pubs, arts venues, charities all teetering on the brink. Will anything of our old familiar lives remain? Norfolk charity comforts the dying in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has one hospice for a population of 112 million. Half of its funding comes from a charity led by Sue Mumford, a nurse who lives in north Norfolk.
“My doctor husband and I are really privileged to have found a passion,” said Sue, “and fortunate that we can do this together. And we are in good enough health to cope with the rigours of travelling in Ethiopia.”

Sue is a Community Specialist Palliative Care Nurse. She helps people cope with the end of life, by controlling pain and symptoms, and offering psychological and spiritual support. ....

Matthew Project launches appeal for veterans
The Matthew Project has launched a fundraising appeal specifically for Outside The Wire - a bespoke drug and alcohol service offering confidential advice and support to current and ex-HM Forces veterans and their families across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
OTW Service Manager and Recovery Practitioner, Wayne Copsey, said: “PTSD and drug/alcohol misuse issues have been exacerbated by coronavirus and the associated lockdown, which has increased isolation and reduced social contact - we have seen a 12% increase in referrals.

“Lack of structure and relationship issues have added to these problems, and resulted in worsening mental health and increased alcohol use. This is a very vulnerable group, and suicide risk and health problems are a reality.” ....
