Control. he wants to be able to turn everything off and on in his cockpit. but should we have transponders with off switches at all? what do you think? well, first the transponder is turned on before the flight starts. part of the checklist before you leave the gate is turning on the transponder. transponder stays on the entire flight until you reach the gate at your destination and then you current transponder off. now, in 9/11 they turned the transponder off and of course it was harder to detect them. now, mary might know about this, but i thought that post-9/11 as a result of investigating those incidents that there was supposed to be a system that would leave the transponder on at all times and without the pilots being able to turn it off in flight. mary might be able to comment on that. i thought by now, 13 years ....

It was developed in canada. 40 airlines or flight services bought it even though not required. it sends all the information recorded in the aircraft s black box to a controller on the ground. it allows the airline to know all the critical functions of the engines and exactly where the plane is even if there is a power failure or the plane s other communications system is shut down. there s literally no further investment in infrastructure that would be required to do this. obviously more is better but the infrastructure in place now which is the constellation and internet are really the major piece that is you need to do this job. reporter: additionally boeing and airbus are equiping all the new planes with an advanced transponder designed to broadcast out to the world where that plane is every second. they will be mandatory in 2020. but as far as streaming all that black box data, there is some skepticism. a spokesman for the international air transportation association says with ....

Why turn off the transponder if a plane is on fire? instinct would be s.o.s. contact passing information. i think that possible see is a shrinking one but i m not willing to fully dismiss it yet. i think it s possible that they made that turn because they were dealing with some sort of emergency and were considering a divert for emergency landing and maybe in the process of that diversion they became incapacitated due to smoke or fumes and it s plausible that the plane could have continued on for a while before being further affected by fire or running out of fuel at some point. either way, ending up in the ocean, which as barry shift mentioned a couple of minutes ago, is the likeliest possibility. the whole mechanical failure fire thing, like i just said, it s a dwindling possibility but ....
