And if one of those shorts and starts an electrical fire it s almost impossible to get to it and put it out, and those can affect systems and that can be a very dangerous situation. jenna: is there no way for the pilot to let anyone know that something catastrophic is happening? if it takes out his system, and this is the real question because it seems to have taken out multiple backup systems. if the pilot s radios don t work, then you have the, then you have the transponder. you can actually send coded messages through the transponder. if the transponder s not working, you still have your acars system which you can send data link messages to your company. but in this case it seems like three systems the radio, the transponder, the acar system, they were all, they were all inoperative for some reason and that s very unusual. it could be the result of a wire bundle fire. that would be one of the first things i would ask an investigative team from boeing is to say, hey, are these wire ....

Back from the end to the beginning, you hit this thing about the transponder being turned off. and about the acars being disabled. which, those two things make this theory very problematic, but at the same time can we accept that those two things were turned off actively or did they just fail for some mechanical reason? that i think is the key question. seems to me there was a bit more authoritative necessary than necessarily necessitated by the facts in the way that the turning off was portrayed over the weekend. clive irving. thank you very much. you re welcome. joining me now, msnbc national security analyst, don borelli. former special agent in charge of the new york joint terrorism task force. it s striking to me you have a manifest of 239 passengers on this flight, i believe. you immediately had information about two stolen passports. that was identified and flagged immediately. but in ten days, as far as i can tell, nothing more forthcoming that would lead investigators or ....

The transponder, why fly around for however long it flew around for. if that s what you re going to do, you might as well right after takeoff hit the drink, there s no big deal. just dive right into the water. i think that s a far-fetched idea, way off the mark. the flight simulator at the pilot s home, does that raise any red flags for you as an experienced pilot? normally it wouldn t, because i do know that there are guys that like to have a simulator so that if they re going to fly into an unfamiliar airport, they can practice and be very, very comfortable when they do fly in there. but i am a little bit concerned about the sophistication of the one he had and that sort of thing. you know, had this incident not taken place, it probably wouldn t have meant anything but it does mean something now because whoever it is that is flying this airplane through all these machinations is a skilled pilot, very, very skilled, very, ....

Difficult. karen, do you agree with what ross was saying before this basic principle of how confident you as a pilot would be under these conditions to be able to land that plane if there wasn t some catastrophic mechanical failure, if you had to get it down, you could? absolutely. we have anboard computers. we can type in the destination. it s kind f like using your iphone and google maps. follow where you need to go. there was nothing wrong with the airplane, it sounds like. it was just the transponder. there should be no difficulty getting it somewhere. ross, every time that we ve had big, catastrophic commercial air disasters, there has been a kind of engineering response to it or regulatory response to it. and, of course, that s part, right, that s part of why getting to the bottom of the mystery is so important, just in terms of improving the system as a whole which is really kind of a miracle if you take a step back and recognize just how many planes are whizzing through the ....

thailand says that it saw the plane or what it might be the plane show up from time to time. never entered their airspace, which is why they were never concerned about it. never reported this now comes forward and says we have this information which we think was the plane. do you have a time line when they first saw what they believed to be flight 370? we are not getting full information. all they are saying is that the actual plane appeared around the same time that it would make sense for it to be flying past thailand. based on what we know from when we lost the transponder and when the malaysian military also saw it on radar. now, is there did they give a reason why that they are just coming forward now with this data? yeah. they said this wasn t in our airspace so we weren t really that concerned about it. thailand is part of this coalition searching for the plane. they obviously knew it was ....
