Breaking news in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370. just moments ago, we were told the bluefin-21, the underwater drone that was one of the searchers best hopes for finding the plane aborted the first mission, returned to the surface of the indian ocean hours earlier than expected because all of a sudden it turned out deeper there than they thought. we re learning new details also about the copilot of flight 370 and his cell phone. a u.s. official is telling cnn the copilot s cell phone was on and made contact with the cell tower in penang. see the route, goes up straight, that s the projected route to beijing, turns, and that, as you can see through the penang cell phone tower is where it s searching for service. that s about 250 miles away from where the plane s transponder last sent a signal. 250 miles away from all communications system and that plane being turned off course. ....

Co-pilot had his cell phone on while the plane was about 250 miles away from where the transponder stopped working. this from officials with knowledge of the malaysian investigation. and a search of the ocean s surface for signs of debris is also winding down. planes and ships doing a visual search of the indian ocean, that could be called off at any time now. so far they have found absolutely no debris. let s bring back our panel, our cnn safety analyst david soucie, les abend and tim taylor, the president of rv tiburon. the bluefin, talk about what it can do and can t do. the bluefin is simply launched to the bottom and it slowly maps the bottom with sound. what it can do is get about 15 square nautical miles of bottom coverage to see if there s wreckage. then it has to be deployed again, they go down and look ....

Planes were on the plane, 30% of people forget to turn on their phones or don t comply. in asia, you have an ov over-proliferation. that seems odd to me. that sort of stands out here. what would it indicate to you? what would it suggest to you? i think we ve got to see further investigation. we ve seen piece parts. we re seeing pieces of information come out over time. i think what we re going to see as this investigation continues is dribs and drabs of information as they go back through the data and follow new leads. i would be surprised to learn that this is the only phone on. if the transponder stopped working due to a mechanical issue but the co-pilot s phone would work, isn t it odd that he wouldn t have made a mayday phone call? ....
