It would be hard to find a better ending to a high school career than how Saturday played out for Russellville senior Trinity Riggs on Day 2 of the Class 2 track and field state championships at Adkins Stadium. Riggs was in third place through the first five throws of the girls shot put, but she hurled her final attempt 39 feet, 1¾ inches to move into first place and grab her first state title in the final throw of her career.

Russellville senior Cali Coombs had the biggest of smiles as she was rounding the bases Friday afternoon at Killian Softball Complex. After all, home runs in the Final Four don’t happen every day. Coombs’ three-run home run in the fourth inning helped lift the Lady Indians to an 11-4 victory against the Eugene Lady Eagles in the Class 2 third-place game.

Second place in the boys 3,200-meter run wasn’t so bad for New Bloomfield’s Nathan Hinrichs. It helped the state champion beat him with a meet-record time. Hinrichs clocked a runner-up time of 9:46.59 on Friday in the 3,200 at the Class 2 track and field state championships at Adkins Stadium. He trailed only New Covenant Academy’s Tanner Talley, who blazed by the competition with a record time of 9:15.11.
