'Prepared to respond' if a new strain is shown to evade the immunity of the vaccine.
The vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech appears to retain its effectiveness against coronavirus mutations in worrying new variants that have emerged recently in Britain and South Africa, the firms said Thursday.
Several new variants -- each with a cluster of genetic mutations -- have sparked fears over an increase in infectiousness as well as suggestions that the virus could begin to elude immune response, whether from prior infection or a vaccine.

Residents are urged to get vaccinated and limit gatherings to immediate family members.
Infectious Disease Consultant and Microbiologist at the BDF Hospital and member of the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus (Covid-19), Dr. Lt. Col. Manaf Al Qahtani, highlighted the importance of taking extra precautions in light of the prevalence of a variant Covid-19 strain, more highly transmittable than the original Covid-19 strain.
Dr. Al Qahtani noted that vaccines are safe and effective in preventing the spread of the virus as well as preventing serious complications from Covid-19. He further reiterated the importance of registering for the vaccine, to protect individuals, their families and the community.

The crackdown was carried out by the Department of Economic Development.
Authorities in Ajman closed down a café permanently and slapped a Dh60,000 fine on it for blatantly disregarding the 'closure' notice (sticker) issued earlier for violating Covid-19 measures and continuing operations without permission.
The crackdown was carried out by the Department of Economic Development in coordination with the Ajman Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management team.
Major General Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of Ajman Police, head of the Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management team, said that the decision to shut down the cafe permanently came through as a follow-up to the rule that commercial and economic establishments should keep their facilities open only until 12 midnight. During an inspection some time back, it was found that the café had been operating beyond 2am. The department had then issued a 'closure' notice against the cafe.

The risk was low that a resurgence in Covid-19 would derail the housing market.
Dubai's house prices are expected to fall at a slower pace this year and next than previously thought as hopes for a successful vaccine rollout and an economic recovery boost confidence in the sector, a Reuters poll showed.
After declining 3.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2020, Dubai property prices have shown signs of stabilising. They fell by a much slower 0.9 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter after barely changing in second quarter, United Arab Emirates central bank data found.
