Labour markets around the world are undergoing significant changes – particularly in non-tech sectors. South Africa hasn’t been spared from this wave of change. The country has high unemployment rates by global standards, both at national level and among the youth. According to some theories, higher education leads to better labour market outcomes and improves future income through better career paths. But these theories have been criticised in countries with high rates of unemployment, where even graduates often struggle to find employment. It seems higher education is no longer a guarantee of a job. In 2019, South Africa had the largest share of mismatched workers, with skills mismatches of more than 50% and the lowest productivity levels compared with 30 countries including India and Russia. Other studies have found the incidence of educational mismatch to be similarly high in South Africa. A quarter of the respondents were over-educated and 27% were under-educate ....

The now defunct for-profit school defrauded thousands of individuals by encouraging them to enroll and borrow loans based on false and misleading information about the value of an ITT degree and empty promises of high-paying jobs after graduation. “Students who were defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges should be able to obtain debt relief,” said Attorney General Kaul. “The U.S. Department of Education should use its authority to cancel the student loan debt owed by former ITT Tech students.” ....
Unemployed PhDs on a hunger strike over their plight Jobless PhD graduates have gone on a hunger strike and are calling for a sit-in on 31 March in response to police action during a previous protest at the premises of the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research about a policy that is preventing universities from employing them. Video clips and photos about the health situation of hunger strikers have been circulating on social media. In the meantime, the ministry and representatives of the group are in disagreement over the progress and substance of negotiations over the matter. The ministry said a plan had been negotiated, but the protesters stated that talks were taking place in bad faith and had not yet been finalised. ....
Oregon asks US Dept. of Education to forgive more ITT Tech student loans Two previous settlements involved nearly 500 former students SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum filed an application Thursday with the U.S. Department of Education, asking for the cancellation of federal student loan debt for thousands of former students, including an unspecified number of Oregonians, who attended ITT Technical Institute. Rosenblum was joined in the application by a bipartisan group of 25 state attorneys general. The now defunct for-profit school defrauded thousands of students by encouraging them to enroll and take out loans based on misleading information about the value of an ITT degree and empty promises of high-paying jobs after graduation. ....
