New York state is 61% forested - forests cover 18.6 million acres of our 30.2 million total acres. Much of this land is privately owned and managed for wood or pulp. Most of the land owned by the State is forested.

Containing around 250,000 acres, these state-owned lands are available for wildlife-related recreation and enjoying the outdoors. Check individual pages for what activities are allowed at each site or check out the WMA regulations.

Open space is simply land or water that is undeveloped (free from residential, commercial, industrial, or institutional use). Open space can be either private or publicly owned and includes areas such as forests, agricultural field, public parks and preserves, and coastal lands.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today released a draft Access and Public Use Plan (APUP) for the John White Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for public review and comment. The comprehensive plan will guide management for wildlife and public access over a 10-year timeframe, after which DEC will assess conditions and needs and update the plan accordingly.
