A graduate of the ROTC program at the U, Rich entered the United States Air Force and served actively from 1969-1974, honorably discharged as a Captain. He trained for 53 weeks in the T-37 and T-38 jet airplanes at Webb AFB, Texas, then trained in and flew the C-141 Starlifter for four years. Stationed at Travis AFB, CA, Rich flew missions into Vietnam and SE Asia monthly and also around the world, including the Yom Kippur War in Israel.
