BJP's southern star, four-time CM never lasted a full term | India News

BENGALURU: Hotseat took on a new meaning whenever BS Yediyurappa assumed the high office of chief minister. Every time, it has been an “agni pariksha”, triggered by political upheaval, graft charges or natural calamities. So though he single-handedly managed to form a BJP government in the south for the first time, and brought it to office another three times, he never completed a full term in office.
In all, Yediyurappa kept the chair for just 5 years, 2 months and 9 days. These include the seven days during his first term in November 2007 and three days in May 2018. While he never had a stable government, due to lack of majority, it did not help that dissidence had become a norm in the party. Monday’s mid-term resignation was his fourth since becoming the chief minister for the first time in 2007. He first resigned days after taking over as CM when JD(S) withdrew support to BJP by breaking the 20:20 power-sharing pact. However, it helped his cause as BJP managed to return to office in 2008, crying betrayal.

To help the cash-strapped situation in Karnataka, Ministers on Thursday decided to donate one year’s salary for the COVID-19 fund.
After attending a meeting on COVID-19 chaired by Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Revenue Minister R. Ashok told presspersons that the Ministers had decided to donate to help in the fight against COVID-19.
The Chief Minister had appealed to MLAs and MLCs to donate one month’s salary to the fund.
In 2020, the government had slashed 30% salary and allowances of MLAs, MLCs, the Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker and the Ministers for one year. Governor Vajubhai R. Vala too had gone for a 30% cut in his salary.

Nearly a week after the BJP government came under intense criticism from the Opposition over district in-charge Ministers not doing enough in their districts, it seems to have been a mixed effort from the Ministers, who have been present, physically or virtually, to monitor the situation.
Following the criticism from the Opposition at the all-party meeting convened by Governor Vajubhai R. Vala, the Ministers were nudged to be more proactive in their districts by Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. The surge in COVID-19 cases outside Bengaluru has become a cause for concern since several districts are reporting a higher Case Fatality Rate and higher cases in proportion to their population.

Bengaluru, April 20 : Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai R. Vala deciding to preside over an all-party meeting to assess the Covid situation, has not only surprised the Opposition party, Congress but also the ruling party, BJP.
Just hours prior to the high profile meeting was to commence, Karnataka rural development and panchayat raj minister, K. S. Eshwarappa on Tuesday told reporters that he was stunned when he first heard the news about the Governor presiding over the meeting.
"Karnataka has an elected government and it is only that Chief Minister, B. S. Yediyurappa is taken ill but he is attending crucial meetings virtually. It has 'stunned' me not surprised me, why all of a sudden Governor (Vala) has decided to preside over this meeting. What is the message he is trying to convey to the people," he wondered.
