Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general elections, Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday gave a comprehensive update on the trial concerning the trumped-up treason charge brought against him by the Nigerian government. Sowore noted the Nigerian government after being unable to prosecute him for the farcical charge brought a prosecutor who was “pesky, rude, uncouth and unprofessional” to the point that she told the presidential candidate to “shut up” while he was addressing the court.

Several young people in Kenya have died or been maimed as a result of corporal punishments heaped on them in schools, BBC Africa Eye Investigation has revealed.   According to the report, cases of corporal punishment are still prevalent in schools in Kenya despite being outlawed in 2001.   In ‘Taught to Fear: Corporal Punishment in the Classroom,’ the BBC spoke to young victims and their families seeking justice, as well as the Kenyan teachers fighting back to end the brutal form of punishment in classrooms in the country.  

  A mob of angry residents in Kogi State on Wednesday mobbed and nearly killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police who identified himself as ASP Samuel.   Samuel was accused of working with Governor Yahaya Bello’s appointee, Friday Makama, to attack and disrupt the campaign rally of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the November governorship election, Alhaji Muritala Ajaka.

A young boy has been rescued by some concerned citizens in Apamisede area of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the young boy was seen being tortured and buried alive by his elder brother who claimed he was instructed by the boy’s mother to punish the erring boy. The elder brother, who was caught by neighbours, said he buried the boy alive after their mother directed him to punish the boy for stealing N1000.
