Leetonia will continue water shutoffs | News, Sports, Jobs

LEETONIA — Village Council Wednesday night agreed to continue with water shutoffs for delinquent customers.
Council agreed to continue with the shutoffs after learning one customer is subject to the action and is making no apparent effort to stay current on payments. The village had suspended shutoffs in response to the financial difficulties created by the Covid-19 pandemic, but that suspension has expired.
Mayor Kevin Siembida said the customer has already been placed on a delinquent payment plan and provided contact information for public assistance. He said the customer admitted to not seeking public assistance.
Siembida also noted all other customers are making a concerted effort to pay their bills despite the pandemic.

Leetonia council moves to increase utility rates | News, Sports, Jobs

khowell@salemnews.net
LEETONIA — Village Council Wednesday night approved the first readings of increases to sewer and water rates.
Council unanimously approved legislation that raises the minimum sewer rate to $27.95 per month and set the usage rate at $3.97 for each 1,000 gallons over 1,000. Council also unanimously approved legislation that creates a $2.50 monthly service fee for each of the sewer and water capital funds specifically for improvements to the water and sewer lines and systems.
Council acted on the sewer rates to generate enough funds to maintain the wastewater treatment plant, according to a CMOM (Capacity Management Operations and Maintenance) program, or asset management review for waste water, created in 2018 by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA). The service charges are to help replace deteriorating, hundred-year-old water and sewer lines.
