Address the problem. Without objection, the chair may declare a recess at any time. I want to go through our usual housekeeping matters. Todays session will be conducted on an unclassified basis. Second, the committee is conducting this virtual hearing in compliance with House Resolution 965. It is being broadcast live on the committees website. Because of the threat posed by the covid19 pandemic remains ongoing, were proceeding with this hearing remotely in order to ensure the safety of our witnesses, members, staff and public. While we wish we could return to all standard inperson events, health and safety protocols dictate we find alternate means of carrying out our oversight obligations. Okay. So let me remind members of a few remote hearing procedures. First, consistent with the regulations, the committee will keep microphones muted to limit background noise. Membe
Policing, its never been an Institution Designed to keep us safe and used as a tool for those in power to keep the marginalized people from rising up, going all the way back to the slave patrol. Sharing im the policing unfairly targets marginalized communities, injects massive amounts of people into the prison system. We heard about reform from chief scott today, but all those measures ignore the fact that reform is not effective. We need to defund and sfpd and invest in our communities immediately. I yield my time. Thank you for your comments. It cannot force you to create money in a budget. Cut the budget and cut the numbers of police and Fund Services that help humans. End the violence against black and brown people that is built into policing. I disagree with supervisors assessment of what his constituents want. We want services, not Police Officers. I have heard on this call that over time sfpd at the airport, the focus of sfpd and the mandated reforms are not well understood by s
But just in the context of this hearing, id like to point out that the board has been so far, from what ive heard, asking a lot of questions about identifying sort of superfluous elements of the Police Budget such that can be cut, particularly in the light of this budget deficit. And these are only symptoms of a much broader problem, and lets not forget that the Biggest Issue with the police is that this is an institution that directly targets black and brown people and that the time has concluded. Thank you for your comments. Next speaker, please. Hello. My name is ryan. I live in district 4. I urge for divestment of the sfpd. That is essentially all i have to say. Thank you. Thank you. Next speaker, please. Good aft
I am thrilled to see so many people eager to join in dialogue about where we as a nation find ourselves in this drive towards freedom. Seems particularly fitting that we would have this conversation today, the day after our nation caused its daily business to pay tribute to reverend Martin Luther king jr. s life and his legacy and it seems fitting that we would have this conversation the day after our nations first black president was sworn in for his second term. Now i know much of the nation has already moved on and president obamas soaring rhetoric about the promise of america life, liberty, justice and equality for all has already been forgotten by many and i know that many, many people in america will not think of dr. King again until his holiday rolls around again next year. But i would like for us to pause tonight and think more deeply about the meaning of dr. Kings life and his legacy and what it has to teach us about our nations president. I think particularly important for us
