A bright opportunity for budding engineers - Vimarsana News

A bright opportunity for budding engineers

A bright opportunity for budding engineers Carl Kieke For girls with a yen for scientific or engineering activities, you have an opportunity to build a solar-powered car and compare it to cars built by other girls from the area. And you don’t have to go anywhere to do it; it’s all virtual. This event is designated for Girl Scouts of all ages — and non-Girl Scouts from kindergarten through high school — who live in the area covered by Girl Scouts of Central Texas. That includes any county completely south of Interstate 20 – i.e., if I-20 runs through your county, you are not in Cen...

Big Country juniors earn 4-H accolades - Vimarsana News

Big Country juniors earn 4-H accolades

Big Country juniors earn 4-H accolades Carl Kieke Last week I reported on the 4-H Seniors who advanced to the state round-up based on their finish at the District 7 competition. This week, we look at the juniors who finished Top 3 in their events. Juniors do not advance to the state level. Runnels and Taylor counties picked up quite a few top finishers in a variety of categories, which bodes well for competitions in future years as these members advance to the senior level. Runnels County competitors picked up four top finishers, while Taylor County had three. Rylee Vahlenkamp was first with ...

Thanks to shoppers for a literal ton of support - Vimarsana News

Thanks to shoppers for a literal ton of support

Thanks to shoppers for a literal ton of support Carl Kieke I enjoyed a busy but great day May 1. It was made great by a variety of youth groups, Abilene’s four United Supermarket locations and their customers and employees. If you went to one of those stores between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day, you were probably met by Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Girl Scout or Trail Life/American Heritage Girls members, offering you a flyer and encouraging you to pick up a couple of extra items for Food Bank of West Central Texas. Boy, did you ever respond! Combined, the four locations brought in 2,649 pounds of ...

Scouts need help to fill the food bank - Vimarsana News

Scouts need help to fill the food bank

Scouts need help to fill the food bank Carl Kieke I could use some help this weekend from any of my readers who may be in Abilene. Until a few years ago, Boy Scouts ran a food drive for Food Bank of West Central Texas in early November. For several reasons, it ran its course and was discontinued. This year it returns, but in a different format. Instead of going door-to-door, youth groups are setting up in front of Abilene’s United Supermarkets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.  There aren’t enough scout units in Abilene to cover all stores all day. So the opportunity is being offered to Gi...

Girl Scout gets veterans' accolades - Vimarsana News

Girl Scout gets veterans' accolades

Girl Scout gets veterans' accolades Carl Kieke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6873 in Abilene honored a young woman as their Girl Scout of the Year during ceremonies last week. Olivia Hessock, now a freshman at Angelo State University, received the annual honor. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Norman Hessock of Abilene. Hessock graduated from Wylie in 2020 – one of the seniors with the misfortune of losing much of their senior year to the COVID pandemic. But before that, she was obviously quite busy. Before moving to Abilene, she lived in Alaska, where, as a Junior Girl Scout, she earned...
