The Amalgamated Houses and the larger Jerome Park community is mourning the recent death of Cecilia “Ceci” Greene at the age of 91. Friends have offered an outpouring of tributes to the German immigrant who grew up during and survived the Nazi occupation only to seek and find lifelong friends and a better life in America. Greene died on Jan. 23.
The threat of a gas shutdown affecting 827 units at Amalgamated Housing Corp. has seemingly dissolved overnight. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and state Sen. Robert Jackson succeeded in nudging state housing officials to the table Friday, May 5 for a meeting with cooperators, Con Edison, and representatives from the city’s buildings department.
About 160 people convened in Vladeck Hall at 74 Van Cortlandt Park South Monday, the historic gathering place for residents of the Amalgamated Houses, to learn about the sub-standard state of their exposed gas pipelines and look for solutions.
