Monday honors the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and the federal holiday created in celebration of his legacy.
As COVID-19 cases surge in Louisville and around Kentucky, many local events have been moved online, including the showing of a new documentary from Louisville filmmaker and percussionist Joan Brannon.
Her film, “Fire and Heart: A Blueprint for Liberation,” will stream Monday on the YouTube channel of Lexington’s MLK Holiday Planning Committee.
Brannon filmed the racial justice protests in Louisville and Lexington during the late summer and early fall, and spoke with some of the movement’s leaders for the film, such as Louisville poet, author and performer Hannah Drake; Keturah J. Herron from ACLU Kentucky; Louisville Urban League president and CEO Sadiqa Reynolds; Louisville Metro Council member, artist and educator Jecorey Arthur; and Lexington activist Sarah Williams.

While some educators might be tempted to shy away from discussing the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, for Ballard High School 9th grade civics teacher Abigail DeWeese, these events are front and center in the classroom.
Lessons on the insurrection have given her students the opportunity to learn about important concepts, and process a tumultuous time in American history.
“A lot of them really love the opportunity just to get the facts, and to be able to formulate their own opinion and to have a platform to do that in,” DeWeese said.

'Someone Has Got To Tell Them It's OK': School Nurse Gets Coworkers On Board With COVID Vaccine

Amber Ladd is the family resource coordinator for Mill Creek Elementary Leadership Academy. And like some other teachers and employees, the newness of the vaccine makes her nervous about it.
“I would support it once it’s been out on the market a little longer,” she said. “But I’m not comfortable with just jumping into being one of the first hundreds of thousands of people to get this vaccination.”

The CDC and the FDA say the vaccine is safe for almost all adults, with a few exceptions for people who are allergic to the vaccine ingredients. Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness doctor SarahBeth Hartlage said just because this vaccine was developed faster than any before it, doesn’t mean it’s less safe.
