She was born September 7, 1936 in Thomaston, Maine, the daughter of Esther (Swanson) and Walter Matson. Emma attended Thomaston High School – “The Sea Breeze” — and graduated in the Class of 1954. Her first job as a teenager was at Wallace’s Market, in Friendship. She was a 33-year employee at Sylvania, in Waldoboro.
