　　到了20世纪70年代，汪品先和他的同事们依靠简陋的设备，建立起了同济大学海洋地质系。他们住的宿舍是以前的病房，工作的实验室是废旧车间，用来研究微体化石的是两个对不上焦的显微镜。“虽然科研条件差，但是我们仍然奋发努力，想要有所作为。当时，我得到了一些海底表层的泥沙样品，于是我就用吃饭的大瓷盆把泥冲洗之后，得到沉下来的海洋微体化石，再放在显微镜底下去研究。” 汪品先说。
　　就是凭着这样的韧劲儿，汪品先和同事们在1980年完成出版了《中国海洋微体古生物》文集，这本书引起了国际学术界的注意，后来还被翻译成英文出版。
　　“我记得，当时有一家法国杂志感到困惑，中国同行怎么能这么快地作出海底微体化石研究成果呢，感叹中国深海科技觉醒了。该研究成果后来还获了奖。汪品先说。
