Nathan Evans' Sea Shanty 'Wellerman' Sails Onto Billboard Global Charts

Nathan Evans
The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts launched in September and have already spotlighted a diverse array of artists across genre, nationality and language.
On the Feb. 6-dated editions, they welcome another new (old) type of hit: the sea shanty. Nathan Evans debuts at No. 94 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart and at No. 134 on the Global 200 with his version of "Wellerman."
Evans has ridden a startling wave (pun maybe intended) of popularity on TikTok in the last month as he and other users have performed passed-down shanties on the app, going viral and inspiring parodies, covers and remixes. He then signed to Universal's Polydor Records and formally released "Wellerman" Jan. 22, his rendition of the New Zealand whaling song "Soon May the Wellerman Come," whose origins date back to the 1860s.

Sea shanties on TikTok and a foiling proa on YouTube - PBO Channel Hopping Blog

This month's Channel Hopping blog features an Isle of Wight sailor singing a sea shanty about lockdown plus a Polish proa raid narrated in song! Kass Schmitt reports
PBO reader Martin Waitt has had his sea shanty on Tiktok viewed over 1 million times
There may be nothing new under the sun, but happily it’s still fun to see younger generations rediscover old things and show them to us in a new light,
writes Kass Schmitt.
Before Christmas I was struggling to convince some of my yachting journalist peers that they should be paying attention to the TikTok social media platform, which has recently rocketed in popularity. I suggested they follow

The viral 'Wellerman' sea shanty is also a window into the remarkable cross-cultural whaling history of Aotearoa New Zealand

In a year of surprises, one of the more pleasant was the recent runaway viral popularity of 19th century sea shanties on TikTok. A collaborative global response to pandemic isolation, it saw singers and musicians layering harmonies atop an original recording of Soon May the Wellerman Come by Scottish postie Nathan Evans.
Spread via TokTok and other social media, it has become the most popular song in the “ShantyTok” trend. What many fans possibly didn’t realise at first, though, was that the Wellerman shanty is an old New Zealand composition.
More than that, it is a window into an earlier era of global interconnection that shaped the social and economic history of our southern coasts.

Gloucester sea shanty master is 'keeping the tradition alive' on TikTok

Gloucester sea shanty master is ‘keeping the tradition alive’ on TikTok

Welcome to digital life in 2021. We’re all about mittens and sea shanties now.
While Bernie’s mittens get endlessly memed, a 26-year-old Scotsman named Nathan Evans set off a TikTok #seashanty craze late last month when he posted a booming rendition of the 19th-century tune “Soon May The Wellerman Come.” Some 1.6 billion #shanty (or #chantey) posts now flood the platform, while Evans has landed a record deal.
The sea shanty trend is “phenomenal for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is keeping the tradition alive,” said Gloucester shanty master David Coffin, 60, in an interview this week. Coffin has performed throughout New England since 1980, gigging everywhere from maritime festivals to schools and museums. Since 2014, he’s been an artist-in-residence at Revels in Cambridge. The baritone stars as a Greek chorus, of sorts, on Amazon Prime’s Maine-set “Blow the Man Down.” Actually, he’s the first person you see in the indie thriller/dark comedy.

TikTok sea-shanty star scores a record deal with 'Wellerman'

The Wellerman has indeed come for newly minted TikTok star Nathan Evans — or, more appropriately, a record company has come for “The Wellerman.”
“Ohhhhhh my God. See how I was a postman on Friday. I have just signed to the biggest record label in the world. I have just signed a deal with Polydor Records. I’ve done it,” he said on TikTok, where he uses the name Nathan Evanss.
“I’ve done it. It’s done. It’s done. And I’m releasing a single. I’m releasing a single. I’m releasing a single,” the clearly excited singer said, right before he walked off camera to get himself some champagne to celebrate.
