MW approves hazard mitigation plan; Updates will be made

In his newly-appointed role, Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn went over the Hazard Mitigation Plan of Palo Pinto County, which is reevaluated every five years.
“The hazard mitigation plan was initially adopted in 2015, we started working on it in 2016, so it’s a consecutive thing that we keep doing over and over,” Dunn said at Tuesday’s city council meeting. “So basically you take all of the natural disasters that can impact this city and this county, and we take into consideration what we can do to prevent them, what we can do to aid them to leave us in better shape — for example, floodwater and a drainage system eliminates that threat. There’s some things you can’t control, a tornado you can’t control.”

Mineral Wells airport to get $13K in COVID-19 relief funds


The Mineral Wells Regional Airport is being awarded $13,000 in coronavirus relief funding.
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn made the announcement on Monday, saying the funding comes through the Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020, which he voted in favor of last December.
“More and more Texans are getting vaccinated every day and we’ve seen an uptick in air travel as a result,” Cornyn said in the release. “I am glad to have helped deliver this funding that will improve the health and safety of transportation workers and travelers in Mineral Wells.”
The CRRSAA was signed into law on Dec. 27, 2020, and included $2 billion in funds to be awarded.

GOOD THINGS COMING: MW officials highlight state of community at chamber event


Mineral Wells ISD Assistant Superintendent David Tarver highlighted programs and new opportunities occurring at each campus.
Tarver started by discussing a technology platform that students have available in the library where students can access e-books throughout the summer.
“They can continue to make those advances in their reading levels through the summer,” he said. “Some kids are really close to taking those next steps and we want them to keep progressing.”
MWISD is now one-to-one with technology and Tarver gave the example of a 4-year-old student that was able to go to the library, build a project, take a photo of it using an application and submit it to their teacher for a grade.

Ryan Dunn has been named the new Mineral Wells Fire and EMS Department chief following the retirement of Mike Pool.
“I am very humbled and thankful for the opportunity,” Dunn said. “Though at the moment it can be a little overwhelming, I know this is where I am supposed to be. I was raised in this community and it will always be my home.”
Mineral Wells City Manager Randy Criswell said appointing Dunn as fire chief was one of the easiest decisions he’s ever made.

Mineral Wells awards bid for sidewalk projects in downtown revitalization

M&C Fonseca Construction was awarded the Mineral Wells Downtown Revitalization project for a total of $503,027.25, and the city council approved an additional $6,527.25 to cover Tuesday night.
The city authorized the solicitation of bids in November and received and opened the bids on Jan. 20 for the project, which is through the Texas Community Development Block Grant program.
There were three base bids consisting of sidewalk improvements. Bid 1 is for NE 1st Avenue from the old post office to Hubbard Street. Bid 2 is for NE 1st Street from Oak Street to NE 1st Avenue and Bid 3 is for the sidewalk directly in front of the post office.
