Black Leadership Council urges Burlington to end business with F&M Bank

The Hawk Eye Members of the Black Leadership Council on Monday urged the Burlington City Council to decide whether to continue the city s business with a local bank.  After months of discussion, the Rev. Rob Brown, president of the BLC, said it is time city council members make clear where they stand on continuing business with Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust. What we are asking to be put on the agenda, said Brown. In early November, Lisa Walsh, a vice president of F&M, posted a comment to her Facebook page saying she didn t want to be led by a minority slut, referring to then-vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Harris, a daughter of immigrants, is of both African and Asian descent.

Rich Egger/file photo The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of southeast Iowa; Clark and Scotland counties in northeast Missouri; and McDonough, Knox, Warren, Hancock, and Henderson counties in western Illinois until noon on Friday, February 5. The weather service said snow is expected to fall for several hours and become heavy at times with several inches expected. Winds behind the front will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph during the afternoon and evening. Short-lived white out conditions have been reported along and just after the back end of the snow band in central Iowa. This threat will continue as the front moves into the area. Drifting snow will be a problem through Friday morning.

The City of  Also in  The  Illini West High School District will use remote learning Tuesday. Keokuk Public and Catholic schools will have a two-hour delay Tuesday. Buses will run on hard surface roads only. The  LaHarpe School District will hold a remote learning day on Tuesday. Milestones Area Agency on Aging will not provide Home Meal Delivery Service on Tuesday or Wednesday this week in the Keokuk, Fort Madison, and Burlington areas.  Meal delivery will resume on Thursday, January 28.

Winter storm spurs cancelations, delays in southeast Iowa The Hawk Eye The winter storm system that moved into the Midwest Monday dumped several inches of snow over southeast Iowa before exiting the region Tuesday.  The storm brought about three inches of snow to Burlington, while other areas of southeast Iowa saw between two and five inches. The storm initially had been expected to impact southeast Iowa Monday morning, prompting the Burlington School District and Notre Dame Catholic Schools to cancel in-person classes, with Burlington students instead attending classes online. Southeastern Community College closed its buildings at noon in anticipation of the storm, and the West Burlington School District announced shortly after 10 a.m. that it would release students two hours early Monday and move to online classes Tuesday.
