Ivory Coast opposition parties return for parliamentary election

Abidjan, Ivory Coast – Ivory Coast’s parliamentary election on March 6 will see President Alassane Ouattara’s party challenged by two opposition parties led by former presidents.
The vote on Saturday is the first test for Ouattara since last year’s turbulent presidential election that saw him re-elected with a landslide and was marred by deadly violence.
The governing party, Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), faces challenges from both Henri Konan Bedie’s Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI) and Laurent Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), which both boycotted the presidential vote.
It is the first election that Gbagbo’s faction will contest since 2011, when the former leader was sent to The Hague to stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity over a wave of violence that followed the 2010 election. The violence, sparked by his refusal to concede defeat to Ouattara, led to about 3,000 deaths. Gbagbo was acquitted in 2019.

ISS: Evidence must guide terrorism prevention in Benin and Togo

For civil society and the media to play a meaningful role, they need accurate information about violent extremism.
Since 2016, terrorism has become a serious threat in Benin and Togo. Violent extremist groups continue to carry out attacks close to the northern borders that these countries share with Burkina Faso and Niger, or in their territories.
Examples include the 9 February 2020 attack on a Benin police station in Kérémou, in the commune of Banikoara, near the Burkina Faso border, and the kidnapping in May 2019 of two French tourists and their local guide from Benin’s Pendjari Park.

HE LAST time Ivory Coast had a close election, 3,000 people were killed. So when a policeman in Abidjan, its commercial capital, recently saw men with machetes pouring out of vans, chatting amicably with his police chief and then attacking nearby unarmed protesters while the police looked on, he complained to Amnesty International, a human-rights watchdog. “Their presence was not coincidental,” he said. “This reminds me of the two past crises when militias were sowing terror among the people.”

Following the release of the recently abducted schoolboys in Katsina State, IMOLEAYO OYEDEYI chronicles kidnap incidents that have gripped the country since former military head of state, Muhammadu Buhari, assumed office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
When no fewer than 276 final year female students were kidnapped in the dead of night at the Government Girls secondary school in Chibok, Borno State in one of the most alarming onslaughts of the dreaded terrorists’ group, Boko Haram,  the administration of former Nigerian president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, received spirited criticisms globally.  Many human rights organisations, both local and international, cited the abduction as a testament of the ex-president’s lack of political will and expertise needed to decisively handle issues of insecurity and secure the lives and properties of Nigerians against the growing life-draining threats posed by the rampaging terrorists.
