Pa. Panel OKs District's Sales-Based Tax Assessment Appeal
Law360 (July 8, 2021, 7:56 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania school district's method of selecting properties for tax assessment appeals when recent sales data indicates they were underassessed by more than $150,000 passes muster under the U.S. and Pennsylvania constitutions, a state appeals court ruled Thursday.
In a precedential opinion, the Commonwealth Court rejected arguments from GM Berkshire Hills LLC and GM Oberlin Berkshire Hills LLC that the Wilson School District's use of recent sales prices to determine which assessments to challenge violated the U.S. Constitution's equal protection clause and the Pennsylvania Constitution's uniformity clause.

New federal COVID relief money provides nearly $80 million for Berks County schools

New federal COVID-19 relief funding will bring nearly $80 million to Berks County school districts.
During a media briefing Friday, Pennsylvania Acting Secretary of Education Noe Ortega announced the state had received $2.2 billion for education as part of the federal government's second coronavirus relief package.
"No doubt, the level of need by our schools is great," Ortega said.

Because of that need, he said, Gov. Tom Wolf and department leadership have decided to distribute the entire $2.2 billion directly to school entities.
"All schools have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and I commend school communities for rising to the challenge to combat the toll it has taken," Wolf said in a statement released Friday afternoon. "This extra funding is critical to help schools meet the unique needs of educating students at this time while keeping school buildings safe when students return to the classroom."

Wilson School Board names superintendent to another term

SPRING TWP., Pa. – The Wilson School Board is clearly satisfied with the performance of its superintendent, as the board voted 9-0 Monday night to appoint Richard H. Faidley to another three-year term.

9-year-old girl collects 679 Christmas cards for police officers in Berks County

But this year her parents felt her goal was a bit too ambitious.
In early November, the Lower Heidelberg Township girl told her mother that she wanted to make greeting cards to deliver to police departments in her area. She set a goal of 300 cards.

“I thought, ‘She’s definitely going to need help,’” her mother, Amanda, said.
Her mom made a flier that she posted on her Facebook and Instagram profiles, saying Mackenzie wants to make sure that all her local police departments get Christmas cards to spread holiday joy this season to those public servants.
