A dragon hovers over the couple as they contemplate the forbidden apple, representing the danger of temptation. And in the background, a little, rotund elephant romps in the sunlight, a sign of chastity and grace. The meaning of these symbols, while obscure today, would have been recognizable in 17th-century Europe. The dragon Rembrandt drew was a figment of his imagination. In a sign of further hybridization of the art market, Galerie König in Berlin has announced a revamped 2021 edition of the in-house art fair that it piloted last year. To oversee the weeklong sale of primary and secondary market works, the gallery has appointed an auctions expert to the helm. Lena Winter has now joined the gallery as the director of the event, dubbed Messe in St. Agnes (“messe” is both the word for fair and church service in German). Her expertise flows from the German auction world, where she served as head of the contemporary art department at Ketterer Kunst in Munich, one of Germany’s leading auction houses. She previously worked at Lempertz and Grisebach auction houses. ....

Yes, weâre right smack in the middle of the holidays, but there is reason yet to rejoice for 2021. On March 12, the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern will debut a new immersive film and sound installation, Time No Longer, by acclaimed multimedia artist Anri Sala. It s set to run through most of the yearâuntil December 12, 2021âand it sounds incredible, and also kind of dark. Guests will watch as a weathered turntable appears to eerily float in a space station with no human presence around to listen to it (suggesting, perhaps, the aftermath of a catastrophe) as 16 earthly sunrises and sunsets come and goâthe film will be projected onto a translucent, 22-by-150-foot screen inside the subterranean reservoir.
