Gender-based violence has long cast a shadow over my work. As an anchor and correspondent for CNN International from 2005 to 2018, I covered the biggest stories from across the globe and bore witness to a scourge often found lurking beyond the spotlight and shrouded in silence. According to the World Health Organization, one in three women has experienced some form of gender-based violence in her lifetime and almost 30% of the time, her abuser is an intimate partner.
