FACT CHECK: Buhari not first to introduce same faith leadership in Nigeria

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah, has said the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) can be traced to President Muhammadu Buhari when he was Military Head of State. Bishop Kukah stated this when he appeared on “Politics Today”, a programme on Channels Television on Thursday, to discuss the […]

On the 50th anniversary of the end of the Biafran war, the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in the late 1960s, declassified British files show that Harold Wilson’s government secretly armed and backed Nigeria’s aggression against the secessionist region.

Banjo, the accidental Biafran

The arrest and trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed IPOB, is going to dominate the news for many months to come. The trial promises to be a cause celebre, one of those rare cases in which politics, criminality and sensation are mixed with high drama. It is indeed a fitting irony that Kanu, despite his frenzied rhetoric, including referring to his country as a zoo, he was still sober enough to carry a Nigerian passport. We look forward to many more sting operations that would bring to justice leaders of Boko Haram terrorist group and other outlaw organisations.

The State Security Services (SSS) otherwise called Department of Security Services (DSS), as expected, has taken a cue from their British MI6 masters goading them on manipulative and disruptive or – if you like, divide and conquer journalism. There is a divisive article ostensibly floated about how Aguiyi Ironsi and Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu betrayed Adaka Boro s quest for Niger Delta Republic. The intended outcome of the propaganda-filled article and the untenable, flimsy narrative the people behind it are pushing, is not in doubt. The emotional blackmail of the article percolated on the imaginary reading surface aimed at convincing a gullible reader that Ironsi and Ojukwu arrested, jailed and – without providing any shred of historical evidence, killed over one hundred and fifty (150) of his soldiers thereby, somehow, betraying his Niger Delta Republican Movement. That is a lie in 2021 similar to ones told in 1967 by a sophisticated country dependent on Biafra oil and gas.

It is interesting that 46 years after General Yakubu Jack Gowon was toppled as our military Head of State, Nigeria still retains the hope of the Black Race as the first Black power. No country is richer than us in terms of natural and human resources. No one has the fortune of having two of Africa’s mightiest rivers, the Niger and Benue, traverse through its estate. Sudan may be larger, the Democratic Republic of Congo may have more natural resources, Angola may have more oil deposit, but no country combines the sheer size, the pulsating energy and the riotous recklessness of Nigeria. Now we may even be careless enough to go to war over cattle!
