The First Minister has used the coronavirus pandemic to transform Scotland into an independent "state" rather than a country in the UK, Express.co.uk has been told. It comes as Ms Sturgeon said Scotland's objective must be "to eliminate" coronavirus. She warned that "the virus won't play ball" with any effort to maintain numbers at a "medium level".

Members of the Labour Party who attempted to steer the UK back into the EU in the four years after the referendum should start "thinking a little bit" about their actions, Paul Embery, a leading trade unionist and Labour member told Express.co.uk. Almost all of the Opposition party backed Remain, one factor in a string of disasters that led to Labour's devastating defeat in the 2019 general election, its worst performance in a ballot since 1935. Scores of once considered Labour safe seats fell to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party, many like Bishop in Auckland for the first time.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party's leader, has come under fierce criticism in recent weeks for "not being political enough". Just over a year has passed since Sir Keir was put forward for the role by former leader Jeremy Corbyn's local party branch. In this time, he has sought to upend the party from the radical image it assumed under Mr Corbyn and his allies, known as "Corbynites".

Disaster marred Brussels this week as the EU scrambled to defend its actions after threatening to cut the UK's vaccine supplies and triggering the contentious Article 16 of the Brexit deal, which effectively erects a hard border on the island of Ireland. While European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has since backtracked on the bloc's aggression, after a tense call with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the question of stability across the Irish Sea has once again surfaced. Police are now monitoring "stress" and "growing discontent" within unionist communities in the border regions, with frustrated graffiti having appeared and "sinister" threats made to staff in recent days.

Critics of Brussels this week blasted the bureaucratic nature of the bloc following the delay of its mass vaccination programme. It came as European civil servants raced to rectify its poor start after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened to cut vaccine supplies to Britain and trigger Article 16, creating a hard border on the island of Ireland. Following momentous backlash, Ms von der Leyen backtracked, and assured that no such "vaccine nationalism" would take place.

The Labour Party was thrown into turmoil after a leaked memo outlining how the outfit planned to win back Red Wall voters sent shivers through its membership. Sir Keir Starmer has sought to turn Labour into the "national party" following four years of leadership under "unpatriotic" Jeremy Corbyn. In speeches, the Labour leader has sprinkled buzzwords like "history, values and identity" to push the party's newfound national pride.

Labour leader since April 2020, Sir Keir's politics "instinctively" mirror those of former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, Express.co.uk has been told. It will come as a blow to the politician who is attempting to rebrand Labour, pushing the message that the party is "under new management". Moving away from former leader Jeremy Corbyn's inability to connect with Britain's working classes, Sir Keir has declared Labour the "patriotic party".
