TOKYO, July 22 (Xinhua) Athletics has been a showpiece of the Olympics ever since the birth of the modern Games in 1896. This year s edition in Tokyo will be no exception as athletes vie for 48 gold medals (24 for men, 23 for women and one mixed). Xinhua identifies some of the athletes, competitions and curiosities to watch out for.
THE KEY FACTS
The athletics, or track and field, program will take place at the Olympic Stadium in the heart of Tokyo.
The marathons and walking events will be staged in Sapporo, on Japan s northernmost island of Hokkaido, to avoid Tokyo s potentially brutal summer heat. There will be one more gold medal for men because of the absence of a 50km women s walk. ....

heptathlon
It was on the Olympic stage, nine years ago, that the British heptathlete was propelled into the international spotlight. Aged 19, Johnson-Thompson set a national U20 record of 6267 to place a highly respectable 13th at the London Olympics while her teammate Jessica Ennis-Hill struck gold.
Just one year later, Johnson-Thompson was in the hunt for medals at the World Championships in Moscow, eventually finishing fifth in a close competition. She went on to rack up three major titles indoors, winning two European indoor crowns and the 2018 world indoor gold medal, but narrowly missed out at outdoor championships, finishing sixth at the 2016 Olympics and fifth at the 2017 World Championships. ....

Rising Canadian athlete switches citizenship, hoping to compete for China in Tokyo Olympics

But three years later, Schultz is a Canadian track-and-field luminary no more.
At a moment of bitter tensions between the two countries, she has taken on Chinese citizenship and hopes to compete for her adopted country in this year’s Tokyo Olympics.
The reasons, Schultz has said, are deeply personal and seem to predate the current turmoil in China-Canada relations. Still, some critics of the regime in Beijing question her choice.
Her maternal grandmother in China once held the high jump world record but could never compete for that nation in the Olympics because it was boycotting the Games at the time. Her grandfather was a Chinese record holder in the high jump. The granddaughter expressed a wish as long ago as 2017 to achieve what her mother’s mother could not. ....
