Council election: Libs want to 'get back to basics'


Louise Burton, from Wamboin, will head the ticket of six candidates.
Ms Burton, who is a mother and works in national security, says council needs to get back to basics.
“All on the ticket agree that our council needs to get back to roads, rates and rubbish,” Ms Burton says.
“To do that, we have come up with an imaginative yet pragmatic policy plan as the core of our group’s election platform.”
It’s the second time the Liberal’s have run a group ticket at a council election in Queanbeyan-Palerang.

Current QPRC councillor Mark Schweikert, who is also the ticket’s spokesperson, says the candidates are local Liberal Party members, pre-selected by the party’s branches in Braidwood, Bungendore and Queanbeyan. ....

Drug Court pioneer judges it’s time to retire
The Senior Judge of the NSW Drug Court has decided to hang up his gown after dedicating 50 years to the justice system.
Attorney General Mark Speakman paid tribute to Judge Roger Dive, who will officially retire on 6 August, saying Judge Dive’s work had changed an extraordinary number of lives across NSW.
“Judge Dive’s compassion for, understanding of, and dedication to, the people who appear before him is well known in the legal sphere,” Mr Speakman said.
“His Honour developed and implemented the Youth Drug and Alcohol Court within the Children’s Court more than 20 years ago and his leadership of the NSW Drug Court since 2004, has been a major factor in its success. ....

Formidable designer Derek Wrigley, passed away last month, aged 97. You can find his obituary on the ArchitectureAU website and the DIA’s (Design Institute of Australia) website. I knew and worked with Derek for some years in Canberra and I think his design interests were so broad and deep that his exploits could have filled four lives.
Architect
Derek Wrigley graduated in architecture from the Manchester College of Art in 1945 and worked briefly in the UK before emigrating to Australia in 1947. Very soon he purchased an abandoned quarry in Dee Why on the NSW Northern beaches for £100, and he set about building a house, which he called OB1 (for owner builder). ....
