Mask Up/Sink or Swim: Feedback Loops, Lag Times, Albedo Effects

plenty of pollution, predation, precarity
You’ve heard all of this before. Here, another aside tying into this screed: So, just a few days ago, I braved the gales along the Oregon Coast. King tides. Days of rain. The beaches were full of logs, and the rivers coming from Highway 101 were a few feet deep and 20 feet across.
All my outdoor and military training went out the window – instead of getting my hiking boots wet, I opted to climb a log jam in lashing rain. Climb and climb, until, yep, not a senior moment, but a slip on a huge log jammed cedar. Bam. I did a backward fall, like a swan dive in reverse, and, yep, a perfectly large limb, pointing straight up, ready for my right side.

Guest Editorial: My Year as an Essential Grocery Worker Without Essential Protections or Pay

[In an effort to reflect on a very tumultuous year, the Mercury
asked several Portlanders to look back on their 2020 and share how their lives have changed and what they've taken away from their experiences. We’ve agreed to keep the following guest opinion piece from a local Fred Meyer employee anonymous so it doesn't endanger the author’s employment. Here is their 2020 story.—eds]
I am a cashier at Fred Meyer. I have lived in Oregon my whole life. I am a mom of three, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. I am writing to share my experience to show why reinstating grocery workers’ “hero pay” increase is so crucial to workers and shoppers alike.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Wrapping Up
and last updated 2020-12-18 09:44:30-05
BOISE, Idaho — The Salvation Army needs some serious help for the holidays. They need $117,000 locally to reach program goals.
It's been tough because bell ringers were limited to just seven days of ringing. With coronavirus hitting the economy hard, the need among families is greater than ever.
"These are now families we're seeing coming to us for assistance, so that's a new anomaly for a lot of us this year," said Major Thomas Stambaugh, Corp Officer Treasure Valley. "But we're trying to accommodate everybody we can, so everyone can get the support they need to help them get on their feet again."

True Gifts | Columnists | anchoragepress.com

In 1905 there was a short story published by O. Henry. The Gift of the Magi has become one of the most endearing stories about giving others gifts during the holidays. The story is the tale of Della Young who discover she does not have the finances to buy her husband a gift. She ends up selling her hair to buy her husband Jim a platinum chain for his pocket watch. That evening she confesses that she sold her hair to buy the gift. Her husband gives her a set of ornate combs that she cannot use anymore because her hair is so short. Jim then confesses that he sold his pocket watch to buy the combs. The couple is left with useless gifts, but the realization of how far they are willing to go to express their love for one another is priceless.
