OGDEN, Utah – Sustainability remains a top priority at Weber State University, even amidst the challenges presented by a global pandemic. April 22 marks the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, and WSU is celebrating its continued sustainability efforts.
Sustainability Practices and Research Center (SPARC) Director Alice Mulder said the actions of governments, businesses and communities around the world to keep people safe in response to COVID-19 have provided a number of valuable lessons for addressing climate change.
“Importantly, we have learned we can adapt quickly when we are informed by science,” Mulder said. “We can recognize a pressing collective challenge and put our minds to it, with individuals benefiting themselves and the larger community. During the year, we both reduced the spread of the virus and saw reduced emissions and improved air quality as many people worked remotely.� ....

Weber State Hosts Virtual Sustainability Summit

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University will host the 12th annual Intermountain Sustainability Summit, March 18-19, bringing hundreds of sustainability professionals and emerging leaders together virtually.
Started by a Weber State student as a recycling event in 2009, the summit now includes a broad array of topics such as renewable energy, green buildings, supply-chain distribution, transportation, new economic models and cultural shifts.
This year’s virtual event will feature more than 60, locally and nationally renowned, speakers; an Eco Expo, where participants can interact with vendors showcasing sustainable products, services and solutions; a student poster competition; and ecologically focused art. ....

San Diego has become a magnet for homeless people while shelters and government agencies struggle to keep up and provide help.
Not only that, there are different kinds of homeless, such as generational homeless, those who want to be on the streets for one reason or another, those with drug or alcohol related problems, and the working homeless, those who live in their cars with limited resources. For the latter, Dreams for Change is there to help.
Teresa Smith began Dreams for Change, a nonprofit organization, in May 2009 to support homeless and low-income people who were not being served by traditional service providers and government programs. ....

LASUTH CMD condemns increase in rate of gender-based violence

THE Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo has condemned the unprecedented increase in the rate of violence against women in Nigeria and the world at large.
Professor Fabamwo stated this while delivering a paper at the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) first hybrid and 43rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the theme: ‘Gender-Based Violence: A Silent Pandemic’, and sub-themes for discussion on ‘Medical Practice in COVID-19 Era and Beyond, COVID-19 and the Well-being of Women and Children and Achieving Financial Independence while Saving Lives.’’
The CMD described GBV as a violence directed at an individual based on his or her biological sex or gender identity which include physical, serial, verbal, emotional and physical abuse, threats, coercion, economic or educational deprivation which could occur in public or private life. ....
