Wilmington's past fused with its present in beloved Facebook photo page

WILMINGTON – On any given Sunday, Jo Dheilly can be found walking from one end of downtown Wilmington to the other with her head raised to the heavens.
She’s not admiring the clouds. She’s keeping an eye out for the windows, one of the perpetual hallmarks of the architectural past in a historic district that’s constantly changing.
Dheilly is the creator of the Past and Present Images Facebook page, on which she uses historic photos of the region and blends them with snapshots she takes of their locations today. Often black and white mixed with color in a “Pleasantville” sort of way, the photos offer a pinhole peek through time at change and progress. ....

Tampa’s A.R. Savage shipping celebrates 75 years and four generations of family
Paul Guzzo, Tampa Bay Times
TAMPA A.R. Savage & Son celebrated their 75th birthday in 2020 by making their Tampa shipping agency’s name literal again.
Not since Arthur Russell Savage was president of the company and employed his son William Savage has there been an A.R. Savage and a son working together in the company.
Arthur Russel Savage retired in 1968.
William Savage died in 1982 and his wife Shirley McKay Savage became company president.
“When I went to work for her in 1984, she joked she wanted to rename it Savage and Son and Daughter-In-Law and Grandson,” her son Arthur Renfro Savage, 59, said. ....

HAHIRA — Many important figures have traveled through Lowndes County through the years. President Donald Trump s December visit was one of a handful by presidents and first ladies.
But Lowndes County has also seen a king come through, albeit a former one.
In January 1950, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor traveled through Hahira en route to Tallahassee, Fla. Fourteen years earlier, he was King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom. ....

Cape Fear Unearthed podcast revisits Black Thursday when railroad left Wilmington

WILMINGTON – Sixty-five years ago this week, the Port City endured one of the most shocking blindsides in its history.
On Dec. 15, 1955, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad announced it would be ending its century-long relationship with Wilmington, where it operated its headquarters in 1900, and move to a new city, eventually revealed to be Jacksonville, Florida. The day would become known as Black Thursday in Wilmington.
In an instant, the company s 1,600 local employees suddenly found their livelihoods in jeopardy and the city was left to ponder a future without its largest employer.
In time, the railroad’s massive complex on the north end of the downtown riverfront would come down building by building, most notably in 1970 with the razing of Union Station. It was a devastating end to an industry that not only put Wilmington on the map but also made it a powerhouse during some trying chapters in American history, including the Civil War and World War II. ....

Christmas past in Wilmington through photos

We ve seen a host of Christmas traditions in the Wilmington area.
Because of the pandemic, this year s Christmas will be harder on many people, whether they have lost loved ones due to COVID-19 or spending time alone to remain safe.
With that in mind, here s a look at past holidays in the Port City area via photos to provide some measure of good cheer.
Wrightsville Beach: 1940s
At the time, there were very few year-round residents in the beach town, but still some kids ready to try out their new Christmas toys. World War II changed the population, however, with an infusion of shipyard workers during the war and a year-round population that stayed around 1,000 or more afterward. ....
