Following directives by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami that all telecommunication service providers link all active Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards to National Identification Numbers (NIN) of the owners, the rush to enrol for these numbers began.
The penalty of not carrying out the directive was that the lines of active subscribers were going to be blocked. A 14-day ultimatum which was meant to elapse by December 31, 2020, was initially given.
Statistics showed that as of October 2020, the total number of mobile network connections was 207.58 million. With only 43 million of those being linked to valid NINs, it was estimated that 164 million telephone users would face disconnection. ....

Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Aliyu Aziz, has disclosed that 15 million people with Bank Verification Number (BVN) have been linked with the National Identity Number (NIN).
Besides, he said the ongoing enrollment into the National Identity System has nothing to do with the second wave of COVID-19, as the exercise had been on before the pandemic.
He told The Guardian in Abuja, yesterday, that NIMC has adequate equipment and up to this moment, the organisation has not utilised it to full capacity and the strategy now has changed completely. ....

NIN: NIMC workers commence strike over funding, exposure to COVID-19

Thousands of applicants have been locked outside of the offices of the National Identity Management Commission following a strike embarked on by NIMC staff, The PUNCH has learnt.
The notice of strike was signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor.
It read in part, “Consequent upon the just concluded congress of the above mentioned association that took place on January 6, 2020, the unit executive directs all members of grade level 12 and below in the head office and state offices to report to their respective duty posts tomorrow January 7, 2020 and do nothing. ....
