HUBBARD’S CUPBOARD
So much sport is shrouded in gloom and doom but boxing finds the Sunny side of the street
By Alan Hubbard
Having taken the knee – actually it was both knees  – in a rather nasty fall, subsequently ending up flat on my back in a hospital bed these past couple of weeks, I have had plenty of time to reflect on certain aspects of our sporting life.
This enforced spell of unwelcome indisposition is why you have been spared my pearls of pugilistic wisdom of late. But even from this prone position I now feel compelled to put finger to keyboard again as so much of sport seems to have gone off its rocker. ....

In the world of rowing, major international events such as the Rowing Beach Spring have been thrown on the back burner because of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, says the president of the Rowing Association of Barbados (RAB), Dr Anthony Yarde.
RAB has not been financially impacted as a result of COVID lockdowns and Yarde said that the pandemic allowed his associations and many others the opportunity to pause and reflect.
“I think that it is good the guys can start back training and I also think that federations would have had the time to pause. And in that pause, most of them should have had the time to reflect on what they were doing. ....

Recent Form: Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders in their last five fights

Boxing can be a very “what have you done for me lately?” world, and in some respects, there’s good reason for that.
The most recent performances of a fighter are generally the most important in trying to figure out how they’re going to look the next time out. That’s not to say that fights further back don’t matter at all, but people improve, decline, make various changes in their careers or approaches.

Callum Johnson sent out a stark reminder to the the public of exactly what they’d missed on Saturday night, after returning to the ring in emphatic fashion at York Hall.
Johnson (19-1, 14 KOs) offloaded two years of frustration with an explosive two-round shootout against Emil Markic in which he stopped the Croat with a number of hurtful, unanswered punches.
‘The One’ flew out of the blocks and timed his opponent with several right hands, busting up his eye and showing real signs of intent. However, the 35-year-old was caught himself in the opening round and almost dropped from a huge right hand, as the pair traded bombs in the centre of the ring. ....
