LAS CRUCES - More than half of New Mexico s major roads and highways are in fair-to-poor condition, according to a new report released Thursday by the DC-based transportation research nonprofit TRIP. In major metro areas, 34 percent of roadways in the Santa Fe area are in poor condition, compared to 32 percent in the Las Cruces area and 40 percent in the Albuquerque area. Traffic congestion, deteriorated roadways and gaps in safety features cost the state s drivers an estimated $2.7 billion annually, according to TRIP. The 19-page report itemizes $2.79 billion in state transportation projects from resurfacing and road reconstruction to widening, drainage improvements and bridge replacements or widening that remain unfunded. ....
By news editor and partners • Jan 22, 2021 The pedestrian involved in Monday evening’s hit-and-run crash on Amador Avenue has died as a result of his injuries. Las Cruces police learned that 67-year-old Arturo Guillen died from his injuries late Tuesday evening at University Medical Center of El Paso. The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, near the intersection of Amador Avenue and Espina Street. Traffic investigators learned that Guillen was crossing the road near the intersection when he was struck by a white pickup. The driver of the pickup failed to stop and render aid. The driver’s identity and whereabouts were unknown until Tuesday when he contacted police and acknowledged his involvement in the crash. ....
