ACLU Sues County Attorney Allister Adel for 'Coercive' Plea Policy


The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona has filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court against Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel alleging that her office illegally coerces defendants to accept pre-trial convictions through plea deals.
According to the complaint, which was filed today in the U.S. District Court of Arizona, the Maricopa County Attorney s Office has a standing policy of threatening every single person they charge in certain pre-trial court proceedings with substantially harsher plea offers when defendants request preliminary hearings and try to take their case to trial. The filing alleges that prosecutors frequently issue the threat at the top of their initial written plea deal offer and read it into the record at status conferences in front of judges. ....

Sentencing reform dies for third straight year after Fann blocks Senate vote

Arizona will continue to have some of the strictest criminal sentencing laws in the country after Senate President Karen Fann refused to let the Senate vote on a bill that would allow some nonviolent inmates to earn early releases.
With the legislative session nearing its end on Wednesday afternoon, Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake, told the
Arizona Mirror that Fann wouldn’t schedule Senate Bill 1064 for a vote in the Senate.
“It’s disheartening that we’re not doing more for criminal justice reform, being one of the few states left in the union that has failed to not only reform our system but to provide adequate programming for those people that are released,” Blackman said, expressing his “disappointment in our whole legislative system that we had a chance to keep communities safe, to reduce recidivism, lower t ....

A new report from Amnesty International has found that the Biden administration has rapidly expelled thousands of unaccompanied Mexican migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border without adequately conducting screenings to determine whether they might qualify for protection in the U.S.
The report, published Friday, accuses the Biden administration of circumventing an anti-trafficking law to rapidly expel unaccompanied minors back to Mexico, while at the same time allowing unaccompanied minors from Central America and other countries to seek refuge in the U.S.
The report comes on the heels of Vice President Kamala Harris’s trip this week ....
