Phoenix police don’t follow Fe’La iniko on social media, but he knows they’re watching.
“They’re pretty hip to Instagram,” the racial justice activist said. “Sometimes they’ll pop up in my story views.”
Iniko, whose given name is Milton Hasley, often uses social media to share fliers on upcoming protests or speak out against police violence. So when officers surrounded his car last summer while he was leaving a demonstration against the killings of George Floyd and Dion Johnson, iniko worried he might have been targeted in advance for his views. As a handful of cop cars trained their spotlights on him, he was careful to keep his hands visible as he placed them on the steering wheel, a video he posted on Instagram shows. ....

Activists Say Police Oversight Bills Signed by Ducey 'Gut' Accountability in Arizona

Ducey s move to sign the bills comes after last year s national reckoning with police brutality, protests in metro Phoenix, and a series of local law enforcement scandals, such as controversial police shootings and Phoenix police officers exchanging coins marked with white supremacist slogans.
Police reform advocates criticized Ducey s decision to sign the bills as out of step with the times and a direct attack on efforts to hold police accountable.
These bills are going to gut an already broken system of police accountability in this state, said Jared Keenan, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona. Police are rarely held accountable already. This is just going to make it much less likely that they’re going to be held accountable in the future. ....

Health Clinics Brace for Impact After Controversial Anti-Abortion Bill Signed

While the bill won t take effect for 90 days after the end of this year s legislative session, (which could be sometime this month), it s still making waves in the medical community. Attorneys are poring over the legislation to see how abortion providers will have to change their operations. Some doctors are waiting for the seemingly inevitable lawsuit that could stop the bill from becoming active immediately while litigation proceeds in the courts.
All of this does not mean, however, that there hasn t been a chilling effect. Some physicians have had to calm anxious staffers at abortion clinics who are afraid about potential criminal liability. ....

Maricopa County Attorney Won't Say if She Will Prosecute Abortion Docs

We will not be providing comment, she wrote in an email.
When asked if Adel s decision not to take a firm position against prosecuting abortion doctors is hypocritical due to her past assurances that she won t prosecute women for their healthcare choices, Liewer repeated the longstanding talking point.
The County Attorney s position remains the same that she will not prosecute a woman for her healthcare choices, she wrote.
Analise Ortiz, a spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which opposed Senate Bill 1457, slammed Adel s position as hypocritical and concerning.
Her office has so much discretion to choose which crimes they’re going to prosecute and which ones they are not, she said. With all of the power that Allister Adel has, now is the time to come out and reassure the residents of Maricopa County that their access to reproductive healthcare will not be hindered by her office. ....

April 28 (UPI) Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has signed into law a sweeping controversial anti-abortion bill that criminalizes abortions performed due to genetic issues of the fetus amid a Republican push to limit access to the procedure.
The Republican governor signed the bill Tuesday, making it a felony for a medical provider to knowingly perform an abortion because of a fetus genetic abnormality, including chromosomal disorders, such as down syndrome, and morphological malformation. Exceptions are in place for lethal fetal conditions. ....
