Murphy seeks extra $2M for legal help for detained immigrants

Murphy seeks extra $2M for legal help for detained immigrants
TRENTON Gov. Phil Murphy’s budget plan disappoints immigration activists who want people to be provided coronavirus aid even if they’re not legal residents. But it does include another $2 million increase in funding for legal services for unauthorized immigrants facing deportation.
Murphy introduced the program in his first year in office and has gradually increased its budget. The current state budget provides $6.2 million in funding, and he proposes bringing that to $8.2 million.
“Over the last three years, this program has provided representation to hundreds of people detained in New Jersey,” said Ami Kachalia, campaign strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey. ....

Ban considered on NJ prison contracts with ICE for detainees

Ban considered on NJ prison contracts with ICE for detainees
TRENTON A state Senate panel heard arguments for and against prohibiting county and private correctional facilities from entering into agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain unauthorized immigrants.
The Senate Law & Public Safety announced before the debate, though, that it would delay an anticipated vote on the topic.
Four facilities have contracts to hold immigrant detainees in New Jersey for ICE: the Bergen, Essex and Hudson county jails and the Elizabeth Detention Center operated by CoreCivic Inc. The proposal would prohibit those contracts from being renewed and prevent any new, future contracts. ....

New Jersey’s top court heard arguments Tuesday about whether the names of officers found guilty of misconduct should be made public, the final stop in a months-long legal battle between the state’s top law enforcement official and a coalition of police unions.
Unlike many states, New Jersey generally doesn’t name officers who received “major discipline,” which can be used in cases involving abuse of family members, drinking on the job or giving false testimony. ....

NJ marijuana advocates huddle on next steps, including home grow

NJ marijuana advocates huddle on next steps, including home grow
TRENTON – Recreational marijuana is now legal in New Jersey – on the books, though not on store shelves for a while. But its advocates are already talking about next steps, including what many see as the missing link: the right to grow marijuana at home.
Bill Caruso, an attorney and New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform steering committee member, said he’s “very confident” medical marijuana patients will soon gain approval to grow perhaps up to six plants at home for their own use.
“The ability to allow patients the function of achieving the relief they need through some limited medical home grow isn’t really scary any more to a lot of people,” Caruso said. ....
