We Must Try ISIS' Terrorists—or Risk Creating New Ones | United States Institute of Peace

As nations worldwide debate how to handle thousands of their citizens who became fighters for the Islamic State, some people argue for revoking their citizenship, barring them from their homelands. This would leave ISIS ex-fighters in an uncertain detention in Syria, denying them normal judicial processes. Defenders of this idea cite ISIS’ extreme brutality and some argue that vengeance is justified, in part to protect ISIS’ victims. As a former ISIS hostage painfully familiar with that brutality, I must reply that our only viable path is to bring these fighters home to face justice in courts of law.
Families, ex-residents of the Islamic State, have lived since 2019 at the al-Hol camp. Governments have been slow to repatriate their citizens from this and other detention centers in Kurdish-controlled northeast Syria. (Ivor Prickett/The New York Times) ....

ALEXANDRIA: A federal judge in Virginia has tentatively scheduled a January 2022 trial for two Britain militants charged with being part of Daesh that tortured and beheaded American and European hostages in Syria.
A jury trial for El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Amon Kotey is set to start on Jan. 18, 2022. US District Judge T. S. Ellis III scheduled that “target” date during a hearing on Friday, saying it “seems more than reasonable to me.”
The two men, along with other British militants, allegedly made up the Daesh cell nicknamed “The Beatles” by surviving captives because of their English accents.
Kurdish forces captured them in January 2018 in eastern Syria amid the collapse of Daesh, as they tried to escape into Turkey. Their detention set off a debate in the US and Europe over how to prosecute them. ....
