Raised in Macomb, Vivian began staging sit-ins against segregation in Peoria in the 1940s, successfully integrating Barton s Cafeteria a dozen years before lunch-counter protests by college students made national news.
Vivian, a close friend and lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr., died at age 95 in Atlanta last year.
We had to change the way the nation thought and felt and acted about its own humanity and the humanity of others, Vivian told the Journal Star about the civil rights movement as part of its Legacy Project series. This is far more than passing a law. ....
