'I am deeply distraught': Lombard man gets 6 months in jail for fatal Oak Brook crash


A previous version reported prosecutors had agreed to a sentence-recommendation cap.
A Lombard man was sentenced Friday to six months in jail for killing a woman in a crash when he passed in a no-passing zone.
DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin also sentenced Todd Heidenthal, 50, to 30 months of probation and to undergo anger-management treatment, according to court records.
 
The 2019 crash killed Florence Hsiao, 78, of Westmont.
I am deeply distraught, Heidenthal told Guerin during a presentencing hearing Wednesday. I wish that I could change things. I had no intent on harming anybody that day.
Heidenthal said he would understand if Hsiao s daughter couldn t forgive him. ....

Since 2017, retired U.S. Army Major General William Chen, with other leaders and advisors, has promoted the national campaign to honor and recognize Chinese American World War II veterans.
Congress officially unveiled and presented the Chinese American World War II Veterans Congressional Gold Medal, on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Chen was involved in the program.
AsAmNews chatted with the retired 81-year-old general about the campaign and the historical significance of Chinese American soldiers fighting in World War II.
About the Campaign
The Chinese American Citizens Alliance, in San Francisco, California, spearheaded the
Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project. The national campaign aims to identify, honor and recognize the efforts and accomplishments of all Chinese Americans who served in the United States Armed Services during World War II. ....

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021 will feature expanded warbird flying activities as the annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention commemorates the 75th anniversary (plus one) since the end of World War II. The 68th EAA fly-in convention takes place July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
EAA AirVenture will tell the many aviation stories of The Greatest Generation and the worldwide conflict during its renowned afternoon air shows. It will feature flying displays and groups that are favorites for EAA audiences. Highlighting the weeklong commemoration will be major air show flying activities on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31. There will also be additional World War II aircraft featured on the showcase Boeing Plaza on July 30-31. ....

Dec. 20, 1941: First battle of the American Volunteer Group, better known as the “Flying Tigers” in Kunming, China, during World War II. The First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force in 1941–1942, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps, recruited under President Franklin Roosevelt’s authority before Pearl Harbor and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. Their Curtis P-40B Warhawk aircraft, marked with Chinese colors, flew under American control. Their mission was to bomb Japan and defend the Republic of China, but many delays meant the AVG flew in combat after the U.S. and Japan declared war. ....
