Members of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon at the Marine Corps Barracks Washington just south of the U.S. Capitol are still required to wear cloth masks when they rehearse and perform outdoors at their summer evening parades, despite COVID-19 deaths in the area dropping to the single digits and temperatures reaching into the mid-90s.
The Silent Drill Platoon typically performs outdoors at least once a week during summer evenings at the parade field at the Marine barracks in southeast Washington, D.C., as well as at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. ....

U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon performs, swears in recruits

The U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon conducted an approximately 15-minute performance June 1 in front of a crowd at Novi s Fuerst Park, one stop on its nationwide tour.
The 24-man ensemble’s synchronized routine, in which they wield 10-pound M1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets is performed without cadence or spoken orders and ends with a sequence demonstrating spins and tosses of their rifles.
“I was impressed with two things as a community, the respect we had in silence; and second, the discipline that was required to do all the moves in silent unison,” Karen Bulbuk, who attended with her two grandchildren, said. “It was beyond impressive.” ....

A man in his 20s is dead and a stolen party bus has been recovered in another city after a hectic night for Detroit police. Law enforcement is looking into whether the two incidents are connected after gunfire erupted near the Society Club.

After a summer of rioting that saw much of downtown Washington boarded up, now it’s the Capitol that looks like the set of some film depicting a dystopian future. Where downtown’s distress was expressed in sheets of plywood covering storefront glazing, the Capitol’s plight is displayed in barricades, fences, police, and most of all, the presence of camo-clad soldiers from National Guard units across the country.
Far be it for me to suggest that the Guard has been called up less as a show of force than just a show. Jan. 6 was an ugly day that will haunt Republicans for years. One can hardly blame Democrats for doing their best to keep the mob in the front of our minds. How better to do that than by maintaining the image of Washington as a city under siege, the seat of our democratic institutions so threatened it has to be protected by thousands of automatic-weapon-toting troops? ....
