In August 2014, the Klenawicus family, friends, pilots, then-Supervisor James Dougherty and members of the Shelter Island Historical Society, partnered with the Shelter Island Pilots Association to create a a new marker of historical events that have occurred at Klenawicus Field. (Credit: Beverlea Walz) After Island historian Edward Shillingburg was asked to take part in a presentation at the Shelter Island Historical Society in August, a document in the Society’s archives surfaced on the history of the Klenawicus Airfield, and other early stories of Island aviation. The Historical Society’s event later this summer is to consist of several people giving short reports on the Island’s preserved properties, and Mr. Shillingburg drew the Klenawicus straw. “The idea is to bring to the public’s attention the Island’s open space program,” Mr. Shillingburg said. “To answer questions of, ‘What are they?’ ‘Where are they?’” ....

Tucked back from West Neck Road next to and to the rear of Eagle Deli, a gravel driveway opens out to a spacious parking place for an Island institution, the Cornucopia Gift Shop. The dictionary describes the word as “an abundant supply of good things,” which sums up Mary Lou Eichhorn’s delightful shop, which she has owned and operated for 40 years in three different locations. On a recent visit, chatting with Ms. Eichhorn, the door opened and Amy Cococcia entered. “You know what I want,” she smiled at the owner, heading straight to the front of the shop to a display of handcrafted candies. It’s certain that no overall plan to control access to beaches for residents, visitors and day-trippers will please everyone, but efforts are being made to ensure everyone has some access to the water, whether or not they have permits. Another step that won applause was Chairman Peter Vielbig’s proposal to use a service capable of delivering permits at sites for those who need day passes. An electronic system, “Pavemint,” enables drivers to enter the site where they want to use a permit on their cellphones and then enter credit card information to receive a permit.
