Protesters march through downtown Detroit on the sixth day of protests against police brutality on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.
I wholly reject the notion of defunding the police. I think it s the worst idea I ve ever heard, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told the state Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee during a recent hearing.
It s really almost impossible for a police officer to be stripped of their license, except under circumstances of course where you have conviction  not charge, but conviction   of a felony or a high-security misdemeanor, or where there s been a lengthy term of separation from one law enforcement agency to the next, Nessel said, echoing comments she made last year when she unveiled proposed police reforms.  ....

The 1033 Program, Police Militarization, and the War on Drugs

The 1033 Program, Police Militarization, and the War on Drugs

It was a serious discussion; it was a dangerous time. A complete breakdown of trust between the police and Detroit s Black community had led to a civic rebellion at that point in the 1970s. I had already become a young, unsuspecting witness to the random harassment of Black boys like me, while elsewhere in the city, police were beating and killing young Black men in an unprecedented series of assaults. ....

A funeral service is held for 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant at the First Church of God on April 30, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio. Bryant was shot and killed on April 20 by a Columbus police officer answering a domestic dispute call.
After watching 15 seconds of police body camera footage last week, viewers of various races and political affiliations had made a decision: 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was “the aggressor” the “fat,” “huge,” “knife-wielding attacker” and “maniac” who deserved to be fatally shot by the police on April 20 in Columbus, Ohio. ....
