In a special vote on Rule 3 of the club’s constitution, a majority of 83.4 per cent voted in favour of removing the four words “who shall be Gentlemen”. That means the brass and panelled rooms of the venerable club will be thrown open to women members. ....

A mean Atlantic southwesterly howls up the sand dunes, blasting a wintry chill across the grassy headland. Out on the exposed hills a slow procession catches my eye. Leaning into the gale is a hardy knot of Arctic adventurers, pressing on and pausing, driving forward for all their worth. They’re buttoned from head to toe in woolens and waterproofs yet they’re out enjoying themselves, chasing after a small white ball. There’s no doubt golfers are a breed apart.
Do they ever look excited at the first tee? “Oh Jesus, yeah,” replies Martin Shorter, director of golf at the recently opened Doonbeg club in Co. Clare. “Shannon airport is in close proximity to us so American visitors will get off the plane and want to play here or Lahinch on the first day they arrive. It’s 8:30 in the morning and there they are, dead tired but they can’t wait to tee off. You see the sleep in their eyes but the adrenaline is kicking in and they can’t wait to go.” ....

The 11-year-old provided his connections and trainer Mouse Morris with a “fairytale” triumph in the 2016 Grand National.
He was retired quite young at the age of nine in 2016, following his big win. Although in good health when retired, the decision was made based on his previous pelvic injuries and that he deserved a happy retirement. ....

The death has been announced of the internationally renowned soprano and music teacher Dr Veronica Dunne. She was 93 years old.
A renowned singer in her own right, Dr Dunne also trained some of Ireland s best known classical singers, and established the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition, which is dedicated to discovering the best classical singers of the future.
Born in Dublin, Veronica Dunne who was known to her friends as Ronnie, began her vocal studies at the age of 12. She studied in Rome in the 1940s and made her operatic debut in 1948 with the Dublin Grand Opera Society, and her Italian debut in 1952. She later joined the company of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. ....
