Vera Ellen 'a little Jacinda' who dedicated her life to nursing

Vera Ellen with Lieutenant Colonel Maree Sheard, then director of nursing services for the Defence Force, when Ellen received the New Zealand Defence Service Medal for non-operational service, at Parliament House in 2011.
Her mother, Edna, came to New Zealand on a scheme to bring young women to the colonies, and married John Thomas Jabez Ellen.
Ellen was born in the Te Puni Street Nursing Home, Petone. Life was tough for her family in the Depression, and she would later talk about the help received from the Salvation Army. ....

Shirley Wetiford was among four Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps nurses to be deployed to Malaya in 1961.

She had the coat out ready for the annual RSA Poppy Appeal on Friday, April 16, where she was with other returned service members stationed outside a supermarket in Cambridge.
The theme for this year’s appeal was “Service and Sacrifice” and “saluting women and the military”.
Lance Corporal Shirley Churcher [her maiden name], Service No 38735, served in the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps from 1959 to 1962, including 12 months in the Malayan Emergency in 1961. ....
