From the earliest X-rays to the latest body scanners, the ability to visualise the inside of the living body has revolutionised medical diagnosis. With a profound understanding of physics, great technical ingenuity and a mission to put these skills to use in the service of medicine, John Mallard, who has died aged 94, was one of the first to establish routine scanning services that revealed tumours in organs such as the brain and the liver. His team at the University of Aberdeen built the first whole-body MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner and produced the first clinically significant MRI images of a hospital patient. ....

Professor Peter Lachmann, who has died aged 89, was Sheila Joan Smith Professor of Immunology at Cambridge University and made huge contributions to scientific understanding of the “complement system” which contributes to the process by which the body eliminates harmful cells and triggers the production of immune cells known as cytokines.
Lachmann published more than 450 research papers elucidating the complex pathways of the complement system and investigating the immunology of diseases such as measles, systemic lupus erythematosus (a chronic autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and joint pain), mechanisms in tumour immunology and allergy to insect ....

Academics, deputies bid farewell to UCT vice-chancellor Stuart Saunders

UCT academics and former institution leaders are voicing their respects following the death of former Vice-Chancellor, Dr Stuart Saunders.
Saunders died in his sleep on Friday after a long battle with an illness. He was 89 years old.
“Dr Saunders was a titan of South African academia in the 1980s and 1990s,” said Professor Tom Moultrie of the Centre for Actuarial Research. “With good grace, charm, humour and compassion, he was able to lead the institution through difficult and turbulent times.”
Born on August 28, 1931, in Cape Town, Saunders graduated from UCT in 1953 with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. He did postgraduate research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London and at Harvard University, before returning to South Africa and receiving his doctorate in medicine at UCT in 1965. ....
