Times Face-off: Madras HC has hit out at freebie culture but doles are not restricted to poll time. Two noted economists debate pros and cons of state support | India News

Are ‘freebies’ a good idea? Set up in this way, this question almost instinctively invites an answer in the negative. The underlying issue, however, gets obscured in the process and several implicit assumptions are made that are far from valid.
What are typically referred to as ‘freebies’ involve governments providing some facilities or services free of charge, or income (including in kind) support, to those whose income levels are low. The fear often expressed is that this would erode their incentive to strive for and contribute to the productive effort of society. CJI condoles death of Soli J Sorabjee | India News

NEW DELHI: CJI NV Ramana condoled the death of former attorney general Soli J Sorabjee on Friday and said he will be remembered as a legend who added strength to the pillars of democracy.
I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Soli Jehangir Sorabjee, former attorney general of India. In his nearly 68 year long association with the judicial world, he made immeasurable contribution in enriching the global jurisprudence of Human Rights and Fundamental Rights, the CJI said.
The matters that he had argued before the courts and the judgments that he could secure; the books, essays, papers of international repute and the news paper articles that he had authored; the independent opinions he could tender to the government in his capacity as the attorney general – they all stand testimony to his deep commitment to democratic values. He not only lived up to the mandate of the attorney general as enshrined in the Constitution but also raised the bar in discharge o ....

Buenos Aires Times | Ecuador court decriminalises abortion in rape cases

Protesters demonstrate in favour of abortion in Quito, Ecuador. | AFP
Ecuador s Constitutional Court on Wednesday decriminalised abortion in cases of rape, the country s human rights ombudsman announced, a major step in Catholic-majority Latin America where termination of pregnancy is largely taboo.
Ombudsman Freddy Carrion announced the court s decision on Twitter, and said the ruling was possible thanks to the women and feminist groups who have consistently battled for a more fair and egalitarian society.
In Ecuador, a conservative country with an 80 percent Catholic population, a woman risks up to three years in prison for having an abortion.
The procedure is only allowed when a woman s life or health is at risk or if a pregnancy is the result of the rape of a woman with a mental disability. ....

SC extends deadline for filing appeals | India News

NEW DELHI: A massive surge in infections during the second wave of Covid has forced the Supreme Court to indefinitely extend the period of limitations for filing appeals against orders of all judicial and quasi-judicial forums.
After the onset of the pandemic last year, the court had excluded the period from March 15 last year till March 14 this year from being taken into account for computing the period of limitation. Various statutes provide between 30 to 90 days’ period for filing of appeal or completing certain statutory tasks.
A bench of CJI N V Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and A S Bopanna took note of suggestions from attorney general K K Venugopal, solicitor general Tushar Mehta and SC advocates-on-record association president Shivaji Jadhav and used its inherent powers under Articles141 and142 of the Constitution to order indefinite extension of limitation period for all matters. ....
