AL.com announces two new journalists for Alabama Education Lab Updated 10:23 AM; AL.com has hired two more journalists to join its new Alabama Education Lab team, which officially launches later this summer. Rebecca Griesbach and Savannah Tryens-Fernandes are supported by grants from Report for America, a nonprofit that aids local newsrooms. They join Education Editor Ruth Serven Smith, who joined AL.com in January after working as an education reporter and editor in Virginia, and Senior Reporter Trisha Powell Crain, who has reported on Alabama schools for years. “We’re grateful for the support from Report for America to help us report and lead this conversation in Alabama,” said Kelly Ann Scott, vice president of content for Alabama Media Group. ....

Alabama does not have a statewide estimate of absenteeism or how many students have silently left classrooms at some point during the school year during the pandemic. An estimate that 9,800 fewer students enrolled in public school this fall does not capture the scale of a potential dropout, truancy or absentee problem or lack thereof. ....
Alabama becomes fourth state to require FAFSA to graduate high school Updated Apr 08, 2021; . Alabama is now the fourth state to require high school students to complete the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, before getting their diploma. The state board of education okayed the change with a 6 to 3 vote at Thursday’s meeting in Montgomery. The graduating Class of 2022 will be the first to need to fill out the FAFSA in order to graduate. Students will have a way to opt out and still graduate by having their parents complete a waiver form. State Superintendent Eric Mackey told board members that other states with the requirement have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students applying for financial aid. Texas, Louisiana and Illinois also require FAFSAs, and others are considering similar requirements. ....
